David Lisak is a researcher and forensic consultant whose work includes the causes and consequences of interpersonal violence and the motives and characteristics of rapists. He consults with colleges and universities, the U.S. Department of Defense, and other institutions regarding sexual assault prevention policies. A featured speaker at the Dartmouth Summit on Sexual Assault, which begins Sunday, July 13, he agreed to speak withDartmouth Now about his work.

Over the last nine weeks, we have been deeply engaged in learning more about extreme behavior at Dartmouth as it manifests itself in three troubling arenas: high-risk drinking, sexual assault, and lack of inclusivity. This has been and continues to be a multi-faceted learning experience. We have solicited feedback from numerous students individually and in groups. We have hosted faculty summits and lunches. We have met with staff from all areas of the college. And we have and will continue to reach out to alumni groups around the country this summer.

Participants from more than 50 institutions across the United States will be converging on Hanover July 13-15 for the Dartmouth Summit on Sexual Assault, focused on making college campuses safer.
“Dartmouth is committed to being a leader in addressing sexual assault,” says President Phil Hanlon ’77. “This Summit is an important piece in continuing the conversation.”
College and university representatives attending will include prevention educators, campus-based direct service providers, investigators, Title IX coordinators, adjudicators, researchers, campus legal counsel, and student affairs staff.

The Presidential Steering Committee for Moving Dartmouth Forward, formed by President Phil Hanlon ’77 to make recommendations for combating the root causes of extreme behavior, is making a push to gather ideas from students who are just beginning their summer term.
The chair of the committee, Professor of English Barbara Will, will hold open office hours from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, in Sanborn 215, to hear ideas about how Dartmouth should address sexual assault, high-risk drinking, and lack of inclusivity.

The Presidential Steering Committee for Moving Dartmouth Forward, formed by President Phil Hanlon ’77 to make recommendations for combating the root causes of extreme behavior, is in the midst of an intensive effort to gather ideas from Dartmouth students, faculty, and alumni. The chair of the committee, Professor of English Barbara Will, says participation from all groups has exceeded her expectations since the work started on May 5. She called the work of gathering ideas “critical.” “If we want to be effective in this process, we have to get as many people involved as possible,” she says.

Dartmouth President Phil Hanlon ’77 today announced the membership of the Presidential Steering Committee for Moving Dartmouth Forward. The Steering Committee is tasked with making recommendations that will combat the root causes of extreme behavior in the critical areas of sexual assault and high-risk drinking, and will also seek to foster more inclusivity on campus.
