Moving Dartmouth Forward Review Panel Issues First Report

Lawrence Bacow, Chair of the Moving Dartmouth Forward Review Panel, submitted the following letter on November 8, with a request to share it, and the Review Panel's first report, with the Dartmouth community.

Dear Dartmouth Community,

Last January, shortly before announcing his plan for Moving Dartmouth Forward, President Hanlon contacted me and asked if I would be willing to lead a panel charged with monitoring Dartmouth’s progress in implementing the plan. I readily accepted. As a lifelong educator and former university president, I have a long-standing interest in the welfare of students, and was eager to follow President Hanlon’s important initiative.

Following President Hanlon's appointment of the members of the review panel consisting of distinguished  experts and alumni, we began our work in February. Over the last eight months, we have consulted regularly with President Hanlon, and closely tracked the College’s progress in implementing the many steps outlined in the Moving Dartmouth Forward Plan. During a campus visit earlier this month,we met with students, faculty, and staff to get a closer look at the changes being made. On November 7, we met with the Board of Trustees to brief them on our findings, including updates on steps taken since we completed our report in September. These steps include  the appointment of an on-campus confidential advocate from WISE, a local advocacy and crisis service organization and Dartmouth's membership in the new Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success.

Attached is the report, which we presented to the Board of Trustees; this is the first report of the review panel. We plan to continue to monitor progress and to report on our findings annually.
